In North America, chattel slavery lasted for 255 years. Congress passed the 13th Amendment on
January 31, 1865, and the states ratified it on December 6, 1865. However, the enslaved people in Texas
learned about their freedom on June 19, 1865. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making it a federal holiday.

Join fellow REALTORS, on the commemoration of Juneteenth for a workshop that will remind real estate professionals about atrocities that occurred during the period of chattel slavery. Take this opportunity to learn more about how the real estate profession legally and informally implemented discriminatory policies and practices such as redlining, steering, and undervaluing the property and how, even after passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, illegal practices in real estate are still happening.
